Initial background music for our opening scene

When considering the sound we wanted to include our opening scene, we decided that we would want non-digetic music that sounded quite sad but also dramatic to coincide with the atmosphere of the scene. We did also look at other types of music, but decided that this type would best suit the atmosphere of the scene that we wanted to create. as a group, we ended up choosing between the three songs shown below in the screenshots. Eventually, we decided to use the music titled 'Emotional sad piano music | touch (download and royalty free'. This is because the way in which the music is quiet to begin with but gradually the amplitude increases slightly, should work well with the scene as this is similar to the way in which the tension of the scene increases due to the flashback scenes and results being seen. Additionally, this music sounds sad but also dramatic with links with the theme and feeling we hope to generate in the scene. Overall, we felt that this song was the best choice in background music for our opening scene.

Location

Our first location is Didcot Girls' School in which we have set up a fake Doctors surgery and waiting room:
Here are the images of the waiting room area:

Here are the images of the doctors surgery/ room:

Here are the images of the church (we will predominately be filming inside):

Shooting schedule

One very important factor into ensuring our film opening is completed to the best of our ability on time is to have a schedule of when and what we are going to film. Our first day of shooting will be on the 2nd of February at Didcot Girls' School from 3:15- 5pm. On this day we will aim to finish shooting the very first scene of Henry in the waiting room.
Our second day of shooting is going to be on February the 6th on this day we will aim to film 2 of the four of the flashback scenes between Henry and his boyfriend. We will film the scene that takes place in the park and in the church.
Our third day of shooting will be February 11th at St Birinus which we will film some of our opening sequence scenes.
Our next day shooting will be on Friday 12th in which we will film more of the church scenes, as well as film more opening scenes at the church and our doctors surgery scenes which we will film at Didcot Girls' School.

Props list

Here is a list of all of the props we will use in our opening by scene:
  • Doctors Surgery Scene: six matching chairs, coffee table, flyers/magazines, flowers, posters about health conditions such as AIDS and diabetes, HIV poster
  • Doctors Treatment Room Scene: wheelchair treatment, bed, first aid kit, sofa for patients to sit on, sink
  • Cafe scene: tables and chairs, food and drinks at the table, tablecloth, menu, salt and pepper, shakers sauces
  • Living room scene: sofas, lamps, mirror. pillows. television remote
  • Park scene: Benches
  • Church Scene: books of prayer, prayer mats, candles, crosses, pews: we have chosen to include all of these props because these are what you would expect to find in the these places in real life, so by doing this we are making the different settings as realistic and relate able to the audience as possible.

If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. If there is a man who marries a woman and her mother, it is immorality; both he and they shall be burned with fire, so that there will be no immorality in your midst.…

Equiptment list

For our film opening to look continuous and professional we will have to use a range of equipment when filming to ensure there is good video and audio quality and the editing is in continuous prose. Before we begin to film we have decided to create a list of all the equipment we will need to make sure we have got all our equipment organised and ready for the day making filming a smoother progress.

The equipment we will be using to film is:
  • A DSLR camera we chose to use a DSLR camera as it allows us better quality video as opposed to using our phones or any other form of camera. Furthermore, when we film, it will auto focus whilst we film and has options to zoom ensuring that all of our footage will be in focus and in frame.
  • A Tripod the use of a tripod when filming will ensure all of our footage is steady and continuous creating a better viewing experience for our audience.
  • A Microphone: The use of a Microphone in our filming is very important as we need a high quality audio that we cannot obtain from using the camera alone. High quality audio is important in our film opening as if viewers cannot hear or understand what is being said they may miss out on crucial parts of the narrative leaving them feeling confused or disorientated.
  • We'll need studio/ artificial lights in our film opening as some of the areas we are filming in are indoors and we cannot rely on natural lighting alone to ensure that our setting is well lit. It is vital that our setting is well lit as the audience needs to be able to see everything included in the mise en scene such as props and costume to understand the narrative and without this lighting they may not be able to.
  • A Mac computer with the programme 'Final Cut Pro'. Final cut pro is the editing outlet we used to create our ident. We have also chosen to edit our film on final cut pro as it is the editing app we find easiest to use. We also think it has lots of useful functions for the editing of our film such as being able to lay 2 different types of media over each other and the ability to cut and crop clips
  • A Memory card so that we are able to keep all of our clips in one place.
  • A phone to record our 'Levictus' speech on and then upload to Youtube (therefore we will also need internet to do this).

Our opening scene storyboard

1: An extreme wide angle shot of Henry sat in the doctors surgery. There are other people there as well. In this shot, the camera is slowly zooming into Henry's face with a zoom lense.
2: A close up shot of Henry's face showing him nervous and worried. He gets even more nervous looking when notices something...
3: Using the eyeline match editing technique, we will cut to a close up shot of a AIDS/HIV poster to show the audience why Henry is in the doctors surgery.
4: An extreme close up shot focusing on the word AIDS is not shown to emphasise his worry. Over the top of this shot is a non- digetic voice over of a  pastor giving a sermon on homosexulaity and saying that it is sinful.
5: In the scene, Henry then flashes back to the actual moment he heard the sermon in church. A medium shot is used to show him sitting in church listening to it with others around him. (flashback)
6: A wide angle shot of Henry and his boyfriend is now shown. We see them looking very happy together. (flashback)
7: An extreme wide angle tracking shot of Henry and his boyfriend getting up from the park bench and happily walking through the park together is now shown. (flashback)
8: A medium shot of Henry and his boyfriend laughing together at his house is shown to resemble the happy times they've had together.
9: An over the shoulder shot of Henry's boyfriend watching him talk during a conversation between the two of them occurs in a cafe setting. (flashback)
10: Using shot reverse shot editing, we are now shown another over the shoulder shot to show the opposite side of the conversation from Henry's point of view. (flashback)
11: Using an extreme wide angle shot, the scene flashes back to present day as Henry is called in to the doctors room. A tracking shot is used to follow him through the door and to the door of the doctors room.
12: An extreme close up shot of Henry's eyes are shown to emphasise his worry.
13: An extreme close up shot of the medical room sign.
14: As Henry continues to look at the door sign, the door is opened by the doctor and the shot changes to a wide angle shot of the entire room. Both Henry and the doctor walk into the room and sit down.
15:  Henry and the doctor both sit down as shown. The doctor hands a letter consisting of Henry's results. This is still a wide angle shot.
16: An over the shoulder shot is shown of the doctor talking to Henry and she hands him his results letter.
17: An extreme close up shot of Henry opening his letter is shown.
18: The scene ends with a close up reaction shot of Henry's face reacting to his letter however the audience do not yet know what his results are.

Costumes (sketches and annotations)

Henry's boyfriend

Henry Fitzgerald

Dr Henderson

Henry Fitzgerald:
We have dressed our main character Henry in smart clothing consisting of a collared shirt, a buttoned up cardigan, smart trousers and smart shoes. We have done this represent his personality and the background that he is from as his parents are posh and highly religious. By him wearing these smart clothes the audience will be able to tell the background he is from. The audience will also be able to tell that the film is set in the present day from the costumes that each character is individually wearing.
Henry's boyfriend:
We have chosen to make our main characters boyfriend a drug user who comes from a unprivileged background. By dressing our character up in ripped jeans, a hoodie and trainers the audience will immediately be able to see this. By dressing him up in stereo typically ‘chavy’ clothes and dressing Henry up in stereo typically ‘posh’ clothes you will instantly be able to see the juxtaposition/ contrast between the two characters. This helps to show that they are an unlikely couple however have somehow found love with each other. It will also help to pave the way for our main story line which consists of both of the male characters contracting HIV/AIDS. By dressing him up in stereo typically ‘chavy’ clothes and presenting him as a drug user, the audience will then be able to see how the HIV/AIDS is initially contracted and therefore allowing fluidity in our story line.
Doctor:
For the doctor, we chose her to wear a smart outfit consisting of a buttoned up collared shirt, a long midi skirt and smart shoes. We have done this to make the film realistic because if she was a real doctor she would be wearing a smart outfit for the workplace to make her look presentable and welcoming to her patients.

Sound recording plan

We have decided to use a microphone to record all of the sound for our film opening. We have decided to do this because by using a microphone it allows our film opening to have the clearest sound possible. This is important because it means that our audience will be able to hear the characters speak more clearly and will therefore have a clearer understanding of what is going on.

  • Our opening begins with Henry sat in a waiting room for his test results. As he is waiting there will be non-digetic tense music in the background. This will be done to show how anxious he is and to create suspense.
  • The non-digetic tense music continues however is made quieter as another non-digetic sound of a pastor reading a sermon is now introduced.  This sound then becomes digetic as we are then shown a shot of Henry in a church as he hears the sermon being read.
  • This non-digetic sound then changes to happier, more joyful music as we are now shown shots of Henry and his boyfriend who are happy.
  • This happier music then comes to an abrupt stop and the same tense non-digetic music is played quietly in the background until the scene ends.
  • There is then a digetic voice of a doctor saying “Henry Fitzgerald to room 1 please”. Henry then gets up and walks to the door where the same voice says “It’s just in here”.  Henry then walks into the room and the doctor then says  “Hello, I’m Doctor Henderson and I’ll be giving you your results today”. Henry then sits down, is handed a letter with his results and the doctor says “Do you have any questions?”.
  • When Henry opens the letter there is a loud ripping sound as he opens it. By exaggerating the sound it emphasise how nervous he is.

Lighting plan

The first scene will be in a doctor surgery’s waiting room, therefore the room would be well lit. The second scene takes place inside the doctors office, which would have noticeably darker lighting to make it seem as though the lighting is foreshadowing something dark. churches usually have low-light naturally, so the church that we will be filming in will probably be quite dark. This will a signify to the audience to tell them that this scene will be a negative one. The only outdoors scene is going to be set in a park, therefore we will be using natural lighting. We will most likely film this scene at about midday where the sun will be at it’s brightest. The lighting will then change to artificial light as this scene will be filmed in a house, therefore there will be a noticeable change between these scenes. This will be taking place in a public place, therefore we will use the lighting that is available to us.

Mise en scene sketches

Here are some rough sketches of the location/ scenery and some of the props that we intend to use in our film opening. We are going to be using several different locations to film such as a medical room (that we have in our school) that we will use as a doctors room, a doctors waiting room (which we are creating from the area outside our school medical room), a home scene, a park, a cafe and a church (for which we will all use real life scenes of these locations to make them all look as realistic as possible).

Different video editing shots with explanations

Jump cut:
We use this shot to show 2 sequential shots of the same subject, that are taken from camera positions that vary very slightly, jumping forwards in time. In this shot you see the far away however it jumps to a different shot where the subject is much closer.
Match on action:
This shot is when you cut to a new camera angle at the same point in time without breaking the flow of the previous shot. Here, you see the subject in a wide angle shot showing him traveling across the table. This shot then switches to a different shot of the subject closer up reaching the end of the table.
Shot reverse shot:
Here, we see 2 shots edited together that alternate the characters to make it appear like they are having a conversation with each other. In this video, you see an over the shoulder shot of one subject talking to another subject. This then switches to another over the shoulder shot of the second subject talking to the first subject.
Eye line match:
This shot shows the audience that the subject is looking at something in one shot. It then cuts to another shot to show the audience what they're looking at. Here, we see a shot of the subject reading a book. It then cuts to a close up shot of the page of the book to show what they're reading. This is useful to focus on one specific thing and to see what the subject is reacting to/ doing.
Omnipresence:
This editing technique gives us as the creators to move from one spot to another instantly. This allows the film maker to join two separate places together. In this video we see three shots of the subject sat on three different things. This allows us as an audience to understand that these are all linked together.

Dallas Buyers Club opening scene analysis

We chose to analyse the opening scene of Dallas Buyers Club as it is similar to our film. Dallas Buyers Club is also a film of the drama genre which our film is too and also explores HIV/AIDS as the main storyline/ issue. By analysing this scene we have allowed ourselves to have a better understanding of the type of content we need to include in the opening scene of our film.

Ident analysis and creation

To create our ident we firstly bought in a video of ink dropping, which we converted, from YouTube. To be able to do this we had to watch a YouTube tutorial on how to do so. When we had bought the video into final cut pro we then edited down into 10 seconds from a 2-minute clip. We did this to make it look more professional. We then added in our text of our production name, ‘Invicta Pictures Productions’. To add this in we picked the text ‘echo’ an then edited the font and text size to fit with the theme of our ident. Finally we started looking at what music we wanted to include. We picked a relaxing sound to match the pace of the ink dropping. To do this we converted the music into a download on iTunes and carried it into final cut pro. When we had all of our content in the programe we began to edit it to how we wanted it. We added fade in and out effects onto our text and ink video and cut the amount of time that our text would be on the screen for.

The beginning of our ident consists of a plain white screen to make our ident look clean cut and professional.

Here we can see that 2 seconds into our ident, the ink begins to fall.

At 5 seconds, our production name begins to fade into the screen and the ink has fallen further down the screen.

At 8 seconds, the ink has fully fallen and the production name is fully visible on the screen.

At 10 seconds, the text and ink falling begins to fade away as the ident finishes.

Camera shots and film angles

This is a wide shot where the subject takes up the full frame, or at least as much as comfortably possible. This is done to show a large amount of the character on screen, which may be done to show the audience what the character is wearing, something they're carrying, something they're doing, etc.
Here is a low angle shot where the character is shown from below. This is done to assert dominance and power to the character and is often done to show their power over another character. It makes the audience feel intimidated by the character and therefore makes the audience relate more to other characters in the scene.
This is a medium shot which shows some part of the subject in more detail while still giving an impression of the whole subject. It also allows the background to be seen behind the character/ subject so that the audience can get a feel of where they are located.
This is a high angle shot where the camera is looking down on the character. This is used to make them look vulnerable and powerless which is specifically helpful to indicate power imbalances in relationships between characters.
In this image, we can see a still of a tracking shot of someone walking. This is used to show the subject moving from one place to another with fluidity in the scene. This helps to make the audience less confused as they have seen their hourney from one place to the other instead of the character suddenly ending up in one place to another and thus making the audience confused.
Over the shoulder shots are used to present characters conversations with each other. This helps to make the conversation feel more realistic and as though it is actually happening as you almost view the conversation from the other persons perspective.
Here we can see an extreme wide angle shot which is used to show the character and the entirety of the setting that they are in. Although this image only shows the setting, you can get a feel for how the shot may look. This shot is useful for the audience to gain a better understanding of where the character is and what they are doing.
This is an extreme close up shot which allows the audience to focus on one specific thing. This shot is used to gain suspense, add drama and make the audience feel disoriented and more intimately connected to the character. It may be useful for showing a characters reaction to something or to focus one one specific object to highlight it's importance.

In a two people shot, we are shown two characters next to each other This is used to show their relationship and also to allow the audience to gain a better understanding of their relationship.
This is a birds eye shot where the shot is shown from directly above. This is a completely different and somewhat unnatural point of view which can be used for dramatic effect or for showing a different spatial perspective. In drama it can be used to show the positions and motions of different characters and objects, enabling the viewer to see things the characters can't.
In the closeup shot like this one, a certain feature or part of the subject takes up most of the frame. A close up of a person usually means a close up of their face (unless specified otherwise). Close-ups are obviously useful for showing detail and can also be used as a cut in. A close-up of a person emphasises their emotional state. A close-up exaggerates facial expressions which convey emotion. The viewer is drawn into the subject's personal space and shares their feelings.

Mise en scene construction and signifiers for different genres

Propp's narrative theory and Barthes 5 codes: applying these to our film

Vladimir Propp developed a character theory for studying media texts and productions. This indicates that there are 7 broad character types in the 100 tales he analysed, which could be applied to other media:
    •    The villain (struggles against the hero)
    •    The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
    •    The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
    •    The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
    •    The false hero (perceived as good character in beginning but emerges as evil)
    •    The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
    •    The hero (AKA victim/seeker/paladin/winner, reacts to the donor, weds the princess)

When applying Propp's narrative theory to our film, we have found it hard to get the roles exact as our film doesn't entirely apply to this theory, however the following roles somewhat do apply:
  • The villain: Henry's parents are the villain's in the movie as they don't accept him for being gay and disown him when they find our that he's gay and has HIV as they are strongly religious and don't believe it.
  • The donor: The Doctor is equivalent to the donor as she helps Henry to understand how HIV is going to effect his life and how to deal with it in the best ways possible.
  • The (magical) helper: Henry's pastor is the (magical) helper as he helps Henry to understand that being gay isn't wrong or a sin and he helps him to accept himself for who he is.
  • The princess: Henry's boyfriend is the princess as even though they have difficulties in their relationship (the HIV), they end up together again at the end of the film.
  • The false hero: We haven't got a false hero in our film.
  • The dispatcher: Again, the doctor helps Henry to come to terms and understand his HIV status and send him off to live his life.
  • The hero: The hero in our film would be Henry as he reacts to what the donor (doctor) has to say and at the end of the film is back together with the princess (his boyfriend).
Applying Barthes 5 narrative codes to our film/ film opening:
  • Hermeneutic/Enigma code: In the opening scene, the mystery in the text is whether or not Henry has contracted HIV/ AIDS or not.
  • Proairetic/Action code: In our film, we will have sequential elements of action with the film flashing back to Henry finding our his boyfriend has contracted HIV, Henry's parents finding our he has contracted HIV and that he is gay, etc. However in the opening scene we will also include sequential elements of action with Henry being in a doctors surgery awaiting his results, to him hearing a sermon read on how sinful being gay is and Henry's reaction to hearing that, as well as shots of him and his boyfriend in happier times of their lives together.
  • Semantic code: We have included a pastor reading a sermon in our opening scene for our film as it foreshadows how later on in the film we find our that Henry's family are extremely religious which will influence their extremely negative views towards Henry being gay and contracting HIV.
  • Symbolic code: With Henry coming from a posh, religious background and his boyfriend coming from a under privileged, drug using background, we are immediately contrasting the difference between the two of the them which symbolises the different views that their families will both have and the ways in which they both handle the news.
  • Referential code: We have made the main storyline of our film about HIV, therefore if we were filming a whole film we would include scientific and medical facts concerning this topic. However as we are only filming our opening scene, we will not include any of these within that.

Audience theory explanation

Audience theory is an element of thinking that developed within academic literary theory and cultural studies.
Active audiences:
Users and gratifications- Blumler and Katz, 1924:
    •    Diversion (escapism)-audience uses media as emotional release, diverting them from everyday  pressure
    •    Personal relationships- audience needs companionship with know TV characters or programmes as well as the interaction with others who watch it
    •    Personal identity- compare one's won life to a characters life (relatable) therefore gaining perspective on one's own life
    •    Surveillance- given the opportunity to see what else is happening in the world.

Passive audiences:
Hypodermic syringe theory, 1923:

    •    The FrankFurt School, set up in 1923, were concerned about the possible effects of mass media. They proposed the ‘effects’ model, which considered society to be composed of isolated individuals who were susceptible to media messages. The FrankFrurt School envisioned the media as a hypodermic syringe.
    •    TV and video games act on audiences like a direct drug injection. The audience is seen as passive and addictive. The media makers ‘inject’ a kind of ‘instant fix’ into the viewer. This theory places emphasis on the importance of the text as influencing the audience.

Inital ideas for our opening and discussion of genre

 Inital ideas for our opening:

Romantic/ drama genre:

CHARACTER NAMES TO BE DETERMINED (WE HAVE NAMED THEM AFTER THE ACTORS):
  • Storyline- Two male teenagers fall in love. One of the boys, Finn, has a strong Christian family. The other family are drug users and give the boy, Matt,  has an unstable home life.  The two boys meet at school despite adverse criticisms and having to hide their relationship from everyone around them. The boy with the drug using family contracts HIV however he doesn’t realize this and when he and his boyfriend have sex, he transmits it to his boyfriend as well.
  • Set in England, Oxford. We will film parts of it in Oxford and parts in Didcot as well.
  • Set in the present day

  • To educate people on the struggles of HIV and AIDS and to represent gay people.

Discussion of genre:
Romantic Dramas are hybrids and tend to use conventions associated with both genres. Though a drama which is applicable to all sexes due to the fact that it is also a romance makes it more appealing to the females or effeminate males. However, the genre still uses convention of both a romance and a drama so despite being a Romance you can still find mild action and pressing topics due to the influence of Drama.

Preliminary storyboard, video and analysis

After creating our storyboard we then went on to filming it. The final production can be found here:

We encountered many difficulties when filming this preliminary video that we will have take into consideration when filming our final production. Firstly the editing software that we used to edit our preliminary video was not advanced enough which therefore led to the cuts between shots being jumpy, making it harder to follow the narrative. When doing our final production we will be sure to use a more advanced software to ensure smoother cuts between shots. Secondly we struggled with the continuity of the location as we were finding that the props and settings we used during filming weren't always available to us leading there to be a continuity failure. When filming we will also ensure all locations are available and look the same every time we film. I believe that we worked well as a group and each had our assigned roles whilst creating it which worked well. However, our sound isn't too clear because we didn't use a microphone therefore it was sometimes unclear on what the characters were saying. Also, you could hear background noise which we need to avoid in the future.

Film Rating/ target film audience

Age rating:

We have given our film a rating of 15. This is because our film contains sex, drugs, swearing and violence due to it being a film based on AIDS and including a gay relationship which we will show sexual scenes about. Also, we will show scenes with drug use as one of our main male characters comes from a family who use drugs (this is how the HIV/ AIDS is contracted). Also, when looking at HIV/AIDS statistics, it showed how results have found that in America approximately 1.1 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, with more than 50,000 becoming infected with HIV every year and twenty-five percent of them being between the ages of 13 and 24. Therefore, to help raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and hopefully prevent it from spreading, we will be aiming our film at the age group of late teens to early twenties predominately. We will also include scenes with violence, an example of this will be when the family of our main male character who comes from a strong Christian background, find out that their son is gay and has contracted AIDS, these scenes will also include swearing. Also, when looking at other films of a similar nature, such as Dallas Buyers Club, they were also had a 15 certificate therefore we decided to give our film this too.

Audience theory and demographic:

We believe are film will be applicable to the demographics, free spirits, funseekers and armchair rebels. Free spirits are laid back people, who reject the ideas of marriage, shopping, cosmetics, children and capitalism. They are interested in social matters and care about the environment. Over half of them are male and are teenagers. We think this will appeal to them as they are interested in social issues and drugs are a pressing issue of todays society that teenagers need to learn about from a young age. Additionally, AIDS is a big issue that isn’t really talked about, and we hope that from watching this film it will give them information on the subject. We think our film will appear to funseekers because they work hard, play hard and spend hard. They also consume more media then other groups, therefore are likely to watch a film based on key issues. We believe that armchair rebels will watch our film as because they are likely to consume drugs and are young, with an average age of 15. Therefore, as they take drugs, then they may be likely to watch a film concerning the topic of drugs. We also thought that leaders might be a group that would possibly watch our film as they frequently go to the cinema, therefore may watch our film if the topic interests them.

Gender, class, etc:

We believe that the key audience for our film will be women. We think this as our film includes romance, which stereotypically we would associate with women enjoying. Additionally, we believe that our film will mainly appeal to lower classes as the issues it affects would stereotypically involve lower classes as they are the main class that we would involve with drug use.
